Thomas Brent
Thomas joined the CERN Knowledge Transfer Group in July 2024 as a junior communications officer to cover both knowledge transfer activities and CERN’s involvement in various EU projects. Among his responsibilities, Thomas manages the quarterly Accelerating News newsletter that highlights stories and results from the biggest accelerator research and development projects.
Before joining CERN, Thomas was EU news editor at Science|Business, a Brussels-based news publication reporting on research and innovation policy in Europe and globally. There, he led the coverage of the EU’s main R&I funding programme Horizon Europe, including writing about topics such as research infrastructures, the European Research Council, planning for Horizon Europe’s successor and EU start-up and spin off funding. Thomas was also the editor of Science|Business’ Widening newsletter dedicated to R&I in central and eastern Europe.
Thomas has worked for several years as a journalist around the world, in Hungary, France and Cambodia. He was previously digital editor of Southeast Asia Globe, a regional magazine covering politics and societal issues, and was a journalist at The Connexion, an English-language publication in France.
He holds a BA in journalism from Edinburgh Napier University and a postgraduate diploma in central and eastern European studies from the University of Glasgow, part of an ERASMUS Mundus course that involved study semesters at the University of Tartu in Estonia and Corvinus University of Budapest in Hungary.
